I have been growing things since I was a kid, when I planted tomato seeds in a vacant lot across the street. I grew up in Denver and have lived in the area for more years than most natives, so I call myself one. Both my mom and dad were very knowledgeable about horticulture. My dad always raised veggies,and when we were little, rabbits and chickens. He took pride in having the tallest tomato plants in Denver. My mom planted a wild glower garden and the school were she taught.They both volunteered at the Denver Botanic Gardens and helped establish several beds. Some of the tropical plants in the indoor gardens once grew our living room. Along with the usual trees, shrubs, and perennials, I grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs. They are stored, dried, canned, and frozen to supplement the grocery bill, as well as provide us with fresh ORGANIC food and teas. I know were that food comes from. I am an artist, finding my emotional salvation in making things with my hands. This spillsover into the yard, of course. I not only save 'art supply' STUFF, but garden STUFF that is recycled outdoors: bricks, old boards, discarded chicken wire, cut off logs and 4X4s, long sticks pruned from overgrown shrubs, rocks from my dad's collection, and paving stones. You get the picture. My kids call me an old hippy, but now I am GREEN. I haven't changed, just became a different kind of HIP.

I’m a Jeffco Master Gardener who enjoys encouraging other gardeners and learning of their gardening experiences. As a child I learned about gardens from my grandmother, who let me help plant and care for a large vegetable garden. A few years later I enrolled in the gardening project in 4-H here in Jefferson County. My working career took me overseas, where living situations and frequent moves limited my opportunities to garden. But at retirement I returned to “put down roots” again in home territory. Besides volunteering for the Master Gardeners, I help the county 4-H organization with funding activities, including an annual seedling tree sale. I am an amateur genealogist and occasionally find time to do some photography. I collect unusual plants and plan to introduce our readers to some of them.

I grew up on a farm in Kansas and we always had a huge garden, fruit trees and farm animals. We canned tons of fruits and vegetables each year which we enjoyed through the winter until the new garden began producing. I learned to garden from my Dad and have been gardening since I was a child. We lived in the Vail area for 20 years (where gardening was a true challenge!) and then moved to Wheat Ridge in July of 2002. Our yard and garden areas were severely neglected by the former homeowners so one of the first things we did was put in a sprinkler system, new turf and raised beds with drip irrigation in our backyard. I was happy to be able to once again have a normal backyard garden! I also began growing heirloom vegetables, particularly tomatoes, and find this very interesting and enjoyable. We try at least one or two new varieties of vegetables each year and swap seeds with other gardeners. I also learned, through a niece who does geneology searches, that I am related to early American Botanist and Naturalist John Banister. I guess this explains the long history of gardeners in our family!
