Pantone, a globally recognized color institute, has created Very Peri (Pantone 17-3938) as its Color of the Year for 2022.

It encompasses the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possesses a violet-red undertone for a joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages lots of creativity and imaginative expression.  ~Pantone

We gardeners would call it periwinkle.  Look for this color to show up at your local nurseries.  Here are some plant ideas for incorporating this color in your garden/yard.

The Sapphire Indigo Clematis (pictured above) can be grown as a climber, or grow without support as a showy, shrubby ground cover.   It has continuous blooms and will provide stunning masses of large, sapphire blue flowers over a long season.  Zones 4-7 in full sun, 4-5' height.

L.A. Dreamin' Hydrangea (below) should be grown in a location that is shaded from the hot afternoon sun.  Also requires an evenly moist well-drained soil for optimal growth and prefers acidic soils.  Zone 4b, approximately 5 feet in height and 6 feet across.  It is well-suited for use in outdoor pots and containers, but may not perform exactly as indicated on the tag - which is to be expected.

Bellini Grape Lagerstroemia (below) is a bright, purple addition to the garden - resistant to deer and powdery mildew. It is a versatile plant and can be used in containers, along the patio or porch, or in a group.  Attracts pollinators.  Zones 5-9 in full sun.  It has a compact, dense size approximately 3-4' in height and width.

Dapper Lavender Buddleia (pictured below).  Unable to locate this particular butterfly bush variety in the Denver area, but a close match is Pugster Periwinkle Butterfly Bush - 'Proven Winners' (pictured below also).  It is a compact plant with large soft purple flowers. Good choice for attracting bees and butterflies, deer and rabbit resistant.  Zones 5-9, 24' height, 3' width in full sun.
